Situated in the center of
the Western Pacific Ocean, the South
Muntjac Island Marine Preserve enjoys favorable
natural conditions and abundant resources of marine
organisms, especially algae and shellfishes. It
is a state-Level marine preserve which was established
on 30 September.1990 with the approval of the
State Council. The preserve is located between
27.24'30'' and 27.30'00'' north latitude and 120.56'30''and
121.08'30'' east longitude, covering an area of
196km2. The main objective of the preserve is
to protect shellfishes and algae and marine ecology.
403 varieties of shellfishes and 174 algae have
been identified, which are newly---discovered.
The disconnected distribution of the shellfishes
and algae inside the preserve is of zonal and
regional phenomenon existing between tropical
and the two zones. Therefore, the preserve has
an important value not only for the academic study
of marine ecology but also for the protection
of the species of marine shellfishes and algae.
The establishment of the natural
preserve has a boundless beneficence and it is
a great service to our offsprings. All the sections
of the people are expected to do their bit to
help build this preserve and accelerate the development
of marine science and economy.
